4 days, 111 km, over 5.200 hm and a lot of royal mountain bike feeling, THAT are the cornerstones of the royal tour. This tour is basically not new, it has been around for years as an unmistakable winter highlight for ambitious skiers. With skis or snowboard, you only need one day in winter to take the royal tour under the boards. With the mountain bike things look a little different. The mountain bike king tour is divided into 4 daily stages. You can be sure that you will not miss any ascent, no photo spot will remain undiscovered and no single trail will be left behind.
Sounds good, and how does it all feel in practice?
This question also occupied me and I wanted to try this famous bike king tour myself. On hochkoenig.at you can find good descriptions, details and information, but I'm interested in the insider tips, the best single trails and the most rustic huts along the route. Sure thing: a "local expert" is needed. A short phone call and Bike Max, bike guide and local expert, is on fire to show me his version of the King Tour and various "Secret Spots".
The original King Tour is long, far, high and lasts four days. Honestly, we cheated a little during our tour and let Gerhard "shuttle" us. Gerhard is one of the trail building professionals on site, who are currently working on the completion of the flow trail in Dienten. We were allowed to test ride this super trail during our tour and found it to be very good. Along the 4-day version of the King Tour you will enjoy the Flow-Trail in Dienten on day 3 - but more about that later. HERE are a few insider tips for the four day stages along the King Tour!
TIPS for day 1: Maria Alm - Dienten
Maria Alm - Natrun - Jufen - Hinterthal - felt saddle - Grünegg - Dienten
Casual trail from the Auer Almen down to the felt saddle - danger of addiction
Side trip to the Mußbachalm directly at the foot of the Hochkönig - great power place
Warm up at the beginning of the first day on the Flow-ONE Trail in Maria Alm
From Grünegg it goes downhill to Dienten - first stage destination
TIPS for day 2: Dienten - Mühlbach
For many the most scenic stage of the King's Tour
Dienten - Wastlhöhe - Mandlwandstraße - Arthurhaus - Hochkeil - Mühlbach
Stop at the Arthurhaus and take a refreshment or a snack
The Hochkeil is an easy "summit", which can be easily conquered by bike
A side trip on foot to the "4 Hütten" - this photo spot should not be missed
Rushing descent to Mühlbach, the second stage point along the tour
TIPS for day 3: Mühlbach - Dienten
Day 3 lures with a great stopover and the brand new flow trail
Mühlbach - Schneeberg - Tiergartenalm - Wastlhöhe - Bürglalm - Dienten
New flow trail from Bürglalm to Dienten - pure bike fun!
4 km, 550 depth meters with bends, adjacent areas, jumps & tables - pure fun
Bürglalm - tasty syrups and "Austria's best Kaiserschmarren
Detour to the Zachhofalm - cooling down for the feet while kneipping in the pond
"Sundowner" with magnificent views of the limestone walls of the Hochkönig
